I have so been there, Carmen. Thank you for sharing this emotional and vulnerable side to your strength and clarity as a doula. One of the hardest parts for me is to maintain my stamina sometimes. I was recently at two births in 72 hours and, at one point, I really wasn't sure if I could do it. It was with the support of my fellow doulas that I was carried through each minute myself. Since the two births, both sets of parents have shared with me that they were so elated and impressed by my endurance and never saw it waiver for a second. I think what also kept me going was eating/drinking throughout and resting my eyes when I needed. We had a few "group naps" and that was great. Taking care of myself as I care for others is a challenge!

Carmen - you are a wise woman! Thank you for this beautifully written piece. I love the analogy of a "star" being born. I've met many "stars" over the last 7 years and their mothers were incredible containers of strength and beauty!

Elizabeth, welcome back! Although I am no longer involved in the NYC Birth Community on a daily basis my heart is always there. Your continued support and efforts in the doula community are always appreciated and what a gift for us to be able to connect with Ilana through Birth Focus again. I thank you for that:) Keep up the great work--we will all benefit in so many ways.

Tara Brooke
